From about 2013 to 2016, I translated several Japanese short stories as a way to hone my Japanese abilities. This started with my graduation thesis: The Fairy-Tales of Akutagawa Ryunosuke. Following this, I challenged myself to translate a short story by Akutagawa for every week of 2014.
In 2015, I serialized a translation of the book Valley of Lamentation (my title, but also called The Devil's Valley in English) by Kimura Moritake, a record of the worst bear attack in human history which took place in Hokkaido in 1915. I reorganized some of the chapters and added some original material explaining the historical background.
My 2016 translations were largely but not entirely based around works that students might be assigned in school. I particularly enjoyed one of them by Ni'imi Nankichi, and continued translating several more of his works.
